Quarry Products Newcastle is able to manufacture materials to satisfy almost all road material specifications presented to us, however in an attempt to rationalise the possible permutations we have standardised upon the following road material specifications:

UNBOUND PAVEMENT MATERIALS

Specification unbound road-bases are produced by blending aggregates & dusts to the requirements of the specification whereas non-spec materials are run of crusher type products that can often meet the job requirements at a much more advantageous price than the strict specification type materials. Stocks are held at the quarry for most of the above materials. When customers require other materials with different specifications we will check that we are able to make the product then slot these products into vacant production cycles should the need arise.

Production control of unbound pavement materials is attained by internal testing of input products and resulting blended outputs. Confirmation that internal controls are working is achieved by regular conformance testing of stockpile products by independent NATA laboratories.

 

MODIFIED & BOUND PAVEMENT MATERIALS

For situations where more rigid pavements are required to solve poor site conditions, pozzolanic materials can be incorporated into a road-base to change the strengths (UCS) or physical characteristics of the road base. The process of adding pozzolans to road-bases is commonly called stabilisation. The common stabilised materials are divided into 3 classes depending upon the resultant UCS achieved:

  1. Modified materials are specified as having UCS < 1 MPa,
  2. Lightly bound pavement materials need UCS between 1 and 4 MPa,
  3. Heavily bound pavements have their UCS > 4 MPa.

Pozzolanic materials used include Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS) and Fly Ash (FA) which are recycled waste materials from other industries whilst Hydrated Lime (HL) and Cement are primary pozzolanic materials produced for this purpose. The pozzolans are added at the stipulated percentage through mechanical mixes called pugmills that provide a uniformly mixed product of road-base, pozzolan and water. Percentage additions are usually of the order of 1 to 5% unless FA is being used where higher percentages of around 8 to 10% would be more typical.The RTA 3052 specification provides production requirements for the Material to be Bound (MTBB) when under RTA contract however most other road-base materials are also “improved” with the addition of pozzolanic materials.
